MADE BY: Wentworth
DESCRIPTION: Born in 1697, Venetian landscape painter
Giovanni Antonio Canal was better known as Canaletto. He was known for his
grand scenes of the canals of Venice and many of his pictures were sold to
Englishmen on their Grand Tour until the War of Austrian Succession led to
a reduction in the number of British visitors. In 1755 Canaletto moved to
London, during this time his paintings began to loose their fluidity
causing critics to question their authenticity and the artist was
compelled to give public painting demonstrations to refute these claims.
He later retuned to Venice and continued to paint until his death in 1768.
This image is located in the Narodni Gallery in Prague
and depicts St. Paul's Cathedral with the busy Thames River in foreground.
