TITLE: Le Parnasse
ARTIST: N. Poussin
SIZE: 75.5" x 53.5"
PIECES: 8000
PRICE: $126
MADE BY: Educa
DESCRIPTION: Poussin painted this canvas during
his first years in Rome, between 1631 and 1633, using in it the same
composition and the same theme as those of a fresco work painted by Rafael
in the Vatican. This work, now in the Prado Museum in Madrid, shows Mount
Parnassus, close to the source of the spring of Castalia, with a group of
Greek gods and the principal poets, muses, etc. Poussin describes a
serene, luminous image, with smooth subtle colors and the figures
perfectly arranged in space. It is the most perfect example of the
classicism practiced during the French baroque.
