The antique myth depicted here is a love story but also a metaphysical allegory: Psyche is a personification of the human soul. The work, painted in 1798 by Francois illustrates the neoclassicism's evolution towards sensuality and a certain formal abstraction. This particular painting hangs in the Louvre in Paris, France.
